Connie – I’ve just heard your Beatles record and I’m absolutely knocked out by it. (I brought this disc home on Tuesday from Chicago – I borrowed it from my friend at Down Beat – and I’ve already listened to it four times all the way through,) I don’t know exactly what I expected, but these are smart arrangements beautifully sung. Somehow you’ve managed to get the Lennon-McCartney sense of beauty, humor and fun without being overly “jazzy” or pretentious and you rich, lovely voice tells us that you love the music and are not doing the songs because some record person thought it would be the right idea. I was formerly the jazz director at Koch and for 9 years received demos in the mail by many artists, many of whom were singers. It is an absolute delight to hear a disc like yours at this point because it tells me what I’ve always suspected to be true – that there is good music outside of the “usual suspect” cities and that there are still artists who can make familiar material sound fresh. All the best to you, Connie Donald Elfman
